Aeroclear collaborated with the Ian Wark Research Institute at the University of South Australia in 2003 to 2005 in a project on the application of microwave plasma deposited coatings as protective layers for reducing or eliminating the incidence of aircraft window crazing, such as to extend their service life to a target specification of 7-12 years without repair or replacement. A custom-designed microwave plasma system with a chamber large enough to hold full-size aircraft windows was used to apply coatings 2-4 micrometres thick that conferred resistance to crazing under laboratory conditions, and had excellent adhesion, scratch resistance, and hydrophobic properties. The project, conducted at the University under the leadership of Prof. Hans Griesser and Dr. Peter Murphy, has resulted in an international patent application held by the University, protecting the use of coatings with graded chemical compositions as superior craze-resistant coatings.

Aeroclear is investigating possibilities for extending the research and for testing coated windows in real-life situations.
